Monotype print on Zerkall Paper (unframed)

17 × 12 cm printed area

Edition of 1 (unique print)

‘Furrow’ is a unique monotype print based upon a pencil drawing that I made at dusk one evening. I was drawn to the light held within the branches of a beech tree as it stood framed by the backdrop of distant hills. In the print, I translated this setting to a field.

The print was made by rolling an area of ink approximately 17 × 12 cm onto a glass plate and then laying down two sheets of paper. I drew upon the top sheet with soft and hard pencils to press the ink to the paper. The tip of the pencils were used to create the boughs and branches of a copse and to work furrows into the rising field, and the flat side of the lead was used to burnish the layers of cloud.

The paper is Zerkall (145 gsm), hand-torn to a sheet measuring approximately 25 × 20 cm. The ink I used is Cranfield Traditional Letterpress Seville Black. The print is editioned 1/1 (unique print), and signed and titled in pencil beneath the printed area.
