Tu Hwnt / Beyond 3

£60.00

Limited edition wood engraving (unframed)

5 x 5 cm (printed area)

Number of prints in the edition: 50

‘Tu Hwnt / Beyond 3’ is the third in a series of engravings that re-imagine a view up Bwlch Llanberis. The engraving was made from lemonwood and I have hand-burnished each print in the edition to hand-torn sheets of 250 gsm white Somerset Satin paper. The sheets measure approximately 15 x 15 cm. The ink used is Cranfield Traditional Letterpress, Seville Black.

The theme of the print is sustainability, and in particular two significant processes to which North Wales is subject: sea-level change and tourism. Wales is no stranger to sea level change (as the sunken forest at Ynyslas and the legends of the lost Kingdoms of Cantre’r Gwaelod, Llys Helig, attest), and rising sea levels and the rising costs of sea defences have led to the decision no longer to protect specific communities and land. If models of sea-level change prove right, Wales will soon have more sunken kingdoms and far more islands than it currently does. At the same time, local communities and the Welsh language are threatened by holiday lets and second homes, and what is home to some becomes a pleasure park and an attraction to others. Llanberis, like other places with a high tourist footprint, becomes at times a goldfish bowl.
